He brought along some beautiful jonquils and a gold nugget. The nugget weighed about 12 penny weight and was picked up on his farm recently. John has been getting gold from his farm for many years. His place was mined by slaves about 80 years ago. . . . Tom Costa has been wearing orange blossoms taken from a tree at this place in the Thermal Belt. Yeah, the tree is in a hot house . . . L. R. Bacon’s radio talk from WWNC, Asheville, on Tuesday night made a big hit with every one. His voice came over the air nicely and what he said met the approval of all civic boosters . . . A Clean-Up Week committee is Please Turn To Back Page Tryon Subdues Saluda Boys in Tourney Game (By School Reporter) The Tryon high boys won their initial game in the Polk County Basketball Tournament last night by defeating Saluda 20 to 22 and advanced to the finals. This game runs the string of, Tryon victories up to 15 in sixteen starts this season. Saluda put up a good fight inr the first half but weaken ed in the second as Tryon began to pull ahead. Beatson and Taylor for Tryon were the outstanding players ,while the defensive work of Pace stood out for Saluda. Summary: Tryon 22: McFarland 2; Beat son, D. 11; Vining 3; Taylor 5: Melton 0; Chapman 1; Cooksey 0. Slaluda 20: Holbert 3; Hooper 2; Cooper 8; Pace 4; Bradley 3; Michael 0. In the opening game of the annual Tournament the Green’s Creek girls defeated Stearns high girls of Columbus 15 to 9. The play of both teams was aggres sive and the passing excellent. The winners ,however, were more ac curate at the basket and rang up goals when needed.
